Evidence-based medicine

Medicine as a field of human biology is based on empirical evidence. In its theoretical foundation, that is clinical / pharmacological research, this is self-evident. In the field of applied medicine (the medical services that people consume), the principle of evidence-based medicine suggests to use the same approach: base medical decision on empirical evidence. Unfortunately, much of the potentially useful data is not collected in structured models, such that algorithmic analysis is often very hard and information retrieval is a tedious task.

Medical Decision Support System

A software system that uses different algorithmic approaches to support medical decision making processes. Medical Decision Support Systems (MDSS) are usually designed to be used by clinicians and other physicians and developed as commercial software. A crowd-sourced, open MDSS instead is developed and maintained by a large group of volunteers and its target audience are medical professionals and laymen alike.

There is growing recognition that CDS, when well-designed and implemented, holds great potential to improve health care quality and possibly even increase efficiency and reduce health care costs.

Personal Health Record

A personal health record is much like any electronic health record but is managed by its owner, ie. the patient her/himself. The advantage is that all relevant medical information are available to construct a clear image of the persons health situation. A symptom is an identifiable sign of a certain medical condition (headache, joint-pain, nausea, skin irritation, itching, swelling, high blood pressure, low levels of blood sugar or insulin etc). Symptoms are described using a variable set of dimensions depending on the type of symptom (Location in body, Quantity/Intensity/Extension, Frequency, Duration). A specific symptom will have a number of synonyms.

Prevalence is a statistical concept referring to the number of cases of a disease that are present in a particular population at a given time, whereas incidence refers to the number of new cases that develop in a given period of time.
